“The solution which I am urging, is to eradicate the fatal disconnection of subjects which kills the vitality of our modern curriculum. There is only one subject-matter for education, and that is Life in all its manifestations.” –A.N. Whitehead
January Term is an annual two-week experience after Christmas break that offers students unique educational opportunities through classes, internships, and trips that include:
- Reflections on faith and learning
- Aesthetic or kinesthetic learning
- Application of academic principles
- Student collaboration
- Interdisciplinary exploration
- Creative problem solving
- Differentiated learning
- Contemplative and specialized study
The standards of contemporary education are not meant to waylay its primary impulse of love. Rather, these merely exist to bring various academic institutions into universal accountability. We honor and respect this effort at CCHS. However, we know that standards may begin to drive the educational experience. Eventually, for many, learning becomes merely a practical pursuit. It is important, therefore, to have intentional programing that continually re-centers the learning community on the intrinsic value of education.
We believe that this will motivate students and teachers to happily exceed standardization and sustain a long-term love for learning. This is why J-Term exists at CCHS: to combat the pervading utilitarian view of education that dampens the spirit of discovery. Through specialized interdisciplinary classes, students will encounter the beautiful interconnectedness of ideas, facts, and theories. J-term becomes, then, a way for students to discover their passions that will awaken them to all areas of life. This inspiration of the learner translates into specific career interests (internships) and learning experiences beyond the walls of conventional education (travel).
